View Quick Links

Just because you can’t afford the best rehab coverage, doesn’t mean that you can’t access it. Here at the Bright Future Recovery Center we work with countless insurance companies to ensure that you get the treatment you deserve and the treatment you need without breaking the bank.

In this article we’ll look at Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO coverage for Drug Addiction and Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO coverage for alcohol addiction. We will show you how all policyholders of this leading insurance company can take advantage of the celebrated treatments offered here at the Bright Future Recovery.

Overview

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is a community of health insurers, covering a vast network that encompasses 36 separate insurance companies and organizations. Collectively, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association provides coverage to more than 107 million Americans, an astonishing figure when you consider that the total population is a little over 324 million.

Prior to 1982, this organization operated as two separate entities, one of which was founded as far back as 1929. There are many benefits to purchasing a policy with this association, including:

  • National Reach: The BCBS operates in all 50 states, which means that wherever you are, you can receive the help that you need.
  • Biggest Network: While some insurers are limited to a few hundred or thousand hospitals and clinics, the BCBS network covers more than 96% of all hospitals in the United States.
  • Respect and Experience: This is the oldest and most respected organization of its type in the country.
  • Complete Coverage: As well as standard medical treatments, members of the BCBS are also entitled to dental care, mental health care and rehabilitation care.

Bright Future Recovery is a Blue Cross Blue Shield accepted treatment center, and in this guide we’ll show you how you can use Blue Shield Blue Cross to pay for your treatment here.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield Coverage for Specific Addictions

All of the following substance abuse problems are covered under your BCBS policy:

  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Heroin
  • Prescription Drugs (opiates, sedatives, stimulants)
  • Alcohol

You should also be able to receive treatment for psychological addictions, including cannabis, inhalants, synthetic compounds and more. If it has a negative impact on your life and your health, if you perceive it to be a serious problem and if you are struggling to stop using, then you should be able to use your BCBS policy to cover your treatment.

Length and Depth of Coverage

Addiction is a little more complex than many standard medical treatments. If you have a disease or disorder, you will be assessed, diagnosed and then given a course of medication, physical therapy, dietary advice or a combination of all three. With addiction, however, there are many areas to address:

  • Abuse: Why are you using, what is that substance doing to your body and your mind?
  • Withdrawal: As your body tries to reset, you will experience everything from tremors to headaches and sleeplessness. Some withdrawals, such as alcohol withdrawals and benzodiazepine withdrawals, can be life threatening. All withdrawals are unpleasant.
  • Recovery: When you stop using and make it through withdrawals, you need to get through the psychological urges.
  • Relapse Prevention: Many users relapse, so the final stage of treatment is to ensure the things that caused the addiction in the first place have been addressed, thus limiting the chances of a relapse.

Addictions are complex, which is why they are not covered by all insurance policies. There are many BCBS policies that cover them though, and which one you choose will depend on the extent of the coverage you require (from simple assessment and outpatient care, which is not recommended, to comprehensive inpatient care, which offers the best chance of recovery). Money also comes into it, as some policies have larger out-of-pocket expenses than others and by reducing this you will increase the monthly fee that you pay to maintain the policy.

As far as the length of treatment is concerned, this usually depends on the clinic and the patient, but as an example, this is what you can expect from the Bright Future Recovery:

  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO Coverage for Drug Addiction: Heroin detox is notoriously difficult, but it is also fairly short and can be completed within 30 days, which is a standard minimum for drug withdrawal. The same applies to many prescription drugs and even to meth. If there is a dual diagnosis, however, which is when the patient presents with a mental illness as well as an addition, then this can extend to the full 90 days.
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO Coverage for Alcohol Addiction: No two alcohol addictions are the same and there is usually an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. As a result, alcohol detox tends to extend beyond 30 days and goes closer to the maximum of 90 days.

Using Blue Cross/Blue Shield to Pay for Treatment

On most of the polices there is no set limit on the length of time that you can stay in a rehab clinic. Instead, they will typically pay a set amount for each day’s stay. This places the onus on you. You can stay as long as you want, but with each passing day you will be paying for a percentage of your treatment which will increase the cost in the long term.

This may sound like an expensive option, but policies can be acquired for a small monthly cost and the percentage covered by the insurance company is quite substantial, so in the long run, this is a great option whether you’re on a budget or not.

The Federal Employee Program does have a set rate and is a little more appetizing, with a charge of just $250 for a rehab stay within the BCBS network (which includes the Bright Future Recovery) and $350 for one that is outside of the network.  However, you need to be a federal worker or a retired federal worker to apply for this program.
