Memorial Day Honoring Fallen Heroes 2024
Bright Future Recovery is proud to remember and honor fallen heroes on Memorial Day 2024. There are many Memorial Day ceremonies and activities in Northern California this weekend.
Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
For millions of Americans – the Memorial Day holiday marks the beginning of summer. It has become a major shopping day; holiday sales and discounts are advertised and promoted. Retail stores love Memorial Day.
And, the Memorial Day weekend is a major travel day. Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and a 9% jump compared to 2019.
“AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers. “We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

What is the Meaning of Memorial Day?
What is the real meaning and history of Memorial Day?
The day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S.
On Memorial Day and the days leading up to it, Americans from across the country will gather at cemeteries and memorials to honor and remember the service members who sacrificed everything in defense of our nation and freedoms.
The Veterans Association (VA) is hosting ceremonies in honor of Memorial Day at VA National Cemeteries and invites everyone to join Veterans and their families at these events taking place on and around Memorial Day weekend.
Those who cannot attend events in person may also honor a fallen service member by leaving a tribute on the Veterans Legacy Memorial website. Veterans’ stories can be found, as well as decorations and internment locations for each of the 4.5 million Veterans interred at VA national cemeteries, VA grant-funded state, territorial or tribal Veterans’ cemeteries, and certain National Park Service national cemeteries.
Veterans and PTSD
“Research shows that deployment increases risk of PTSD. In some studies, PTSD is 3 times more likely among Veterans who deployed compared to those who did not (of the same service era). Some factors in a combat situation may contribute to PTSD and other mental health problems, including military occupation or specialty, the politics around the war, where the war is fought, and the type of enemy faced.”
PTSD: National Center for PTSD
There is a strong link between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse or drug and alcohol addiction.
Developing PTSD after experiencing a traumatic event increases the risk of an individual having substance abuse issues. It is common for PTSD and Substance Abuse to go hand-in-hand – especially in veterans.
Many people with PTSD use drugs or alcohol as a means to numb feelings and reduce symptoms. It’s a way to self-medicate that can be attractive – but only makes PTSD symptoms worse.
Up to 75 percent of people with PTSD also have a problem with drugs or alcohol. And women are more likely than men to drink or use drugs after experiencing trauma.
