San Luis Obispo is located approximately halfway between Greater Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Founded in 1772, San Luis Obispo is home to approximately 50,000 citizens. When those citizens require legal assistance, in many circumstances, they will be directed to the San Luis Obispo Superior Court.

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court is one of 58 Superior Courts in the state of California. The court’s mission is to serve and build a foundation of trust with the citizens of the San Luis Obispo area by resolving disputes presented to the court fairly. The court aims to provide equal access to justice by utilizing a united court culture, where all employees are able to do their best to appropriately serve the court and the community. 

The court consists of two commissioners and thirteen judges. The judiciary hears all cases filed within the court. The court has three locations – San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Grover Beach 

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court has seven different divisions, as follows: 

  • Civil: The civil division takes care of hearings for child welfare cases, the redress of private rights, and controversies between individual parties. 
  • Collections: The collections division of the court helps to facilitate the payment of delinquent fees and fines. 
  • Criminal: The criminal division of the San Luis Obispo Superior Court helps citizens pay court-ordered fines and resolve warrants. 
  • Family: The family law division of the court deals with a multitude of family and domestic issues, including marriage, divorce, annulment, alimony, adoption, and child abuse
  • Juvenile: The juvenile division of the court deals with minors or those under the age of 18. 
  • Probate: The probate division takes care of cases involving guardianships, conservatorships, estates, and trusts. 
  • Traffic: The traffic division of the San Luis Obispo Superior Court helps citizens take care of traffic citations and attend traffic school.

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court provides much-needed services to those who live in the San Luis Obispo area in a variety of different situations. Citizens of San Luis Obispo can go to the courthouse knowing their issues will be taken seriously and help will be provided.
